POP Account Setup
Each
Hosting package comes with its own POP (Post Office Protocol).
Depending on the level of Hosting you have, will indicate how many
POP accounts you may setup. On your 866GetHost.com server,
you may create as many POP accounts as your Hosting level allows.
Keep in mind that POP accounts are NOT associated with any one Domain
Name. This allows you to use one POP account for several email addresses
across several different Domain Names.
It's
important to understand the difference between a POP account and
an Alias email account.
A POP
account is where your e-mail is actually stored. When you check
your e-mail with Outlook, Eudora, or any of the other e-mail applications
available, the e-mail client looks on the POP server for
the e-mail. Each POP account client would not only have their
own e-mail address, but they would also have their own username
and password to access their e-mail via the POP account.
An e-mail Alias
is a pointer or a forwarding address that uses an existing POP
account. An e-mail alias is just an e-mail name that points to your
real e-mail address (POP server). You can have hundreds of aliases
all pointing to one POP account that only requires one username
and password. It is the Alias that determines what Domain Name the
email address is associated with.
SETTING
UP POP ACCOUNTS
Typically,
each employee or person associated with your company and Hosting
account should have their own POP account setup. To setup a POP
account, you must first log onto your Hosting Control Manager.
-
Log onto your Hosting Control Manager
- From
the Navigation Menu on the left, choose EMAIL MANAGER.
- Click
on EMAIL POP ACCOUNTS.
- In
the ADD POP3 ACCOUNT(s) dialog box, complete all areas.
- POP3
Name: <this should be the persons first and last name>
- POP3
Username: <this should be the account name associated
with this POP account.>
- POP3
Password: <this should be the private password to be
used with this POP3 account>
- POP3
Space Limit <choose from the drop-down menu.
- Click
on ADD POP ACCOUNT
Keep in mind
that you MUST create corresponding ALIAS accounts for each
and every POP account you setup.
When creating
new POP accounts, should you receive the error message: "This
pop username is already in use on this server, please pick another!"
It only means
that the POP account has been selected and is currently in use with
another Domain Name on this server. Simply choose another username.
I highly encourage you to setup POP accounts using each persons
first and last name, or first initial with last name.
Example:
Bob.Brown or BBrown as the POP Username.
Remember, you
do not give out your POP email addresses to clients or friends,
but rather you give out the Alias email address.
