Password Protected Directories

If you want to have files or directories on your Hosting server that only select people can access, you will need to create a password protected directory. Password protecting directories used to be quite a hassle to configure. Not anymore, as we have incorporated a password protection script in your Hosting Control Manager. It is setup in an easy to use graphical format. You can now create password protection in seconds.

SETTING UP PASSWORD PROTECTION

  1. Log onto your Hosting Control Manager
  2. Choose SECURITY OPTIONS from the left navigation menu
  3. Choose PASSWORD PROTECT DIRECTORY

CHOOSING A DIRECTORY

  1. Your first step is to choose which Directory you wish to "protect". From the drop-down menu, select the appropriate directory.
  2. The "Protected Area Name" is what users see in the POP up window when entering the password protected area. If this is left blank, the URL will be used.

CHOOSING USERNAME / PASSWORD

Next you can add a username/password pair. This is what needs to be entered in the pop up window when a user calls the password protected directory. You can add just one username/password pair to the directory for a low security site, such as "open" and "sesame". The advantage to this method is that it is easy to maintain. The other way is to assign each user a unique username/password pair. Then if you decide you no longer want a user to have access to your password protected directory, you simply delete their username/password pair. Enter their usernames and passwords using the following syntax:

username<space>password<enter>

There must always be a space between each username and password. Press "return" or the enter key after each password.

REMOVING PASSWORD PROTECTION

If you no longer want a directory password protected, simply choose the directory from the REMOVE PROTECTION dialog box. You will receive a confirmation screen that states:-

Are you sure you wish to delete the Password Protection on the Directory?

If you choose YES, Delete, then all files associated with that directory will be deleted and anyone will be able to view the files in that directory.
